Travel, whether for business or leisure, may be disrupting routine and challenging to physical and mental well-being. But with a little planning and mindfulness, one can stay healthy on the journey. Here are some practical tips to help you stay healthy on the go.

1. Hydrate
Hydrate, especially on flights or in hot climates. Bring an empty reusable water bottle and fill it up as often as possible. Avoid too much caffeine and alcohol; these can dehydrate you. Drinking water keeps your energy levels even and can help fight jet lag.

2. Pack Healthy Snacks
Most of the time, airport food and roadside eateries have few nutritious options. Bring healthy snacks such as nuts, dried fruit, granola bars, or fresh fruits. These are helpful in providing energy and sustaining one to avoid temptations to fast foods.

3. Sleep
Travel can badly affect your sleep, particularly with long flights or travel across multiple time zones. If necessary, try to achieve regular sleep patterns using eye masks, noise-cancelling headphones, or melatonin. Also, get your body acclimatized to local time as soon as possible by keeping your activities concurrent with daylight hours.

4. Physical Activity
It’s not necessary to spend an hour at the gym when you’re on the move. Walk when possible rather than using cabs, hike and/or bike to see new places, and do your stretches during long plane and car rides. Most hotels have exercise rooms, and there are tons of online workouts you can follow in your room.

5. Eat Healthy
One of the great pleasures in traveling is trying all the local foods, but one must show balance. Avoid overeating or too much processed food. Include fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins in your meals. Opt for grilled, baked, or steamed dishes over fried options.

6. Practice Good Hygiene
One of the easiest, most effective ways to maintain health is frequent handwashing. If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer. Use disinfectant wipes to clean airplane trays, hotel remotes, and other frequently touched surfaces.

7. Protect Your Skin
Even when traveling to a destination that isn’t sunny, sunscreen is necessary. UV rays can affect your skin at any time of the year. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and reapply it every two hours. For added protection, wear sunglasses and a hat when outdoors.

8. Mind Your Mental Health
Travel can be strenuous with very tight schedules or even delays. Take the time to relax and rejuvenate through meditation, journal writing, or simply spending quiet times in nature. Stay close with your loved ones but do not forget to unplug and enjoy the moment.

9. Be Ready for Everything
Bring a small first-aid kit with you, containing pain relievers, band-aids, and other personal medications. Know the location of nearby medical facilities and have the phone numbers for emergencies at your fingertips. It is also smart to invest in travel insurance for added peace of mind.

10. Listen to Your Body
And last but not least, listen to your body. If you are tired, sleep; if you are hungry, eat something healthy. Don’t overexert yourself too much; balance is the keyword which will make your travel enjoyable and keep you fit and healthy.

By inculcating these healthy habits while traveling, you’ll manage to enjoy your journey with a fit body and a fresh mind. Safe and healthy travels!
